FREE LUNCH AT INDIAN SCHOOLS In each indian school a free warm meal is offered to all students upto the age of 13 (or even upto 15 in certain states such as Karnataka). This initiative of the government must prevent that children from poor families are sent to work by their parents. A free lunch at school is a considerable financial contribution for them. Thanks to this system 93 % of these children meanwhile have found their way to education (number for the region of Bangalore; differs from state to state). The project therefore may be called a real success. An additional advantage is an increase of the concentration of the students during the lessons, as they no longer have empty stomaches. Moreover the general health of most of the children has improved for they now get their daily portion of vitamins and minerals. In a lot of nursery schools the children daily become additional fresh fruit, providing extra vitamins. The lunch is often prepared in the school itself. It thereby legally is obliged that at least 1 of the cooks is a person of the caste of the "untouchables" (the so-called dalits) and that everyone must be treated equally. The lunch system clearly has an additional social aim. A lot of schools however do not prepare the meal themselves but arrange outside help: specialized kitchens prepare the food (often by means of an unique system) and deliver it to the surrounding schools. |
